The French government restored the state of health emergency by decree on Wednesday, October 17, at midnight, throughout the country due to the worsening of the COVID-19 epidemic, reports AFP.
In France, traffic restrictions will be imposed at night between 21:00 (19:00 GMT) and 06:00 on Saturday, in several metropolises, including Paris, a measure designed to curb the second wave of coronavirus that hits the country, President Emmanuel Macron announced Wednesday.
“The restrictions will last four weeks and we will go to Parliament to extend them until December 1. Six weeks is the term that seems useful to us, ” the French head of state said in a televised interview.
President Emmanuel Macron announced on Wednesday that anyone who violates the traffic restrictions that will be imposed in the main cities of France will be fined 135 euros.
In an interview broadcast on national television, President Macron said that during restrictions, people should avoid late-night visits to restaurants or friends’ houses.
More than 32,000 people have died in France due to Covid-19
Essential travel may still be allowed during the restriction period.
The French president said there would be no restrictions on public transport and that citizens would still be able to travel between French regions without restrictions.
France reported 22,591 new cases of infection with the new coronavirus on Wednesday, while the number of hospitalizations and deaths caused by COVID-19 continues to rise.
The state of health emergency, which was lifted on July 10, provides a legal framework to control certain restrictions, including the closure.
The worsening of the epidemic, described as a “sanitary catastrophe”, justifies declaring a state of emergency so that measures strictly proportional to health risks can be taken, according to the report of the Council of Ministers.
The coronavirus epidemic has killed more than 32,000 people in France.
