NLP leaders, gathered at the party Tuesday night for an informal gathering, clashed with Ludovic Orban, contesting his desire to become prime minister again by removing Florin Cîțu. Sources who participated in the discussions claim that Florin Cîțu refused to withdraw, saying that only if the PNL BPN votes for this, will it do so.
Ludovic Orban tried to discuss the possibility of the NLP joining the Opposition to convince the liberals to accept it, but they asked him to obtain in writing the agreement of USR PLUS and UDMR for the position of Prime Minister.
The NLP leaders are therefore calling for a “Tripartite Coalition Agreement” to ensure that they do not enter into negotiations without the certainty that Ludovic Orban will have the support of his partners.
The meeting did not end in the way desired by Ludovic Orban, who avoided calling the official BPN meeting in which to request by vote the official withdrawal of Florin Cîțu.
According to sources close to the president of the PNL, Orban assures that USR PLUS would have proposed, during the negotiations over the weekend, that he be the prime minister.
In both the talks on Saturday and Sunday, the USR-PLUS leaders explicitly expressed the variant of Orban taking over as prime minister, when UDMR also expressed its agreement in principle. Basically, after today’s discussions, USR PLUS must express its agreement with the formula proposed by USR PLUS itself ”, the sources cited say.
However, those of USR PLUS vehemently deny this variant presented by the liberals.
“All the positions over the weekend were that we have to divide the three roles. Now, Orban is forcing the interpretation that it can be any of all the parties. Meanwhile, Ludovic Orban’s relatives say that the PNL president is the “correct” prime minister.
According to the decision of the National Council of PNL, the proposal of the prime minister is by right of the president of PNL. Given this decision, within the BPN only the president of the PNL could nominate another person for the position of prime minister. This happened through the proposal made by Ludovic Orban in the person of Florin Cîțu. The variant was not withdrawn ”, they affirm.
Also, according to information within the party, Orban claims that the division of functions in Parliament, if the prime minister were appointed by the NLP, be done only between USR PLUS and PNL, which could upset UDMR.
“The PNL will be able to appoint the prime minister and will have the second option to lead the two houses of Parliament,” say the sources cited.
The leaders of the UDMR demanded in the negotiations the equitable division of the three functions between the three parties.
After tonight’s talks, an official meeting of the NLP leadership could be called only after USR PLUS says whether it agrees with Orban-premier’s option.
In a message posted on Facebook, Dacian Ciolos revealed that he rejects this proposal.
“Speaking of the prime minister’s name talks tonight, the message from USR PLUS is simple: I was serious when I said a new start is needed for Romania,” Cioloș wrote.
