A student believed to be the first Briton to be infected with the new coronavirus died in a “tragic accident” at a university in Wales.

Connor Reed, 26, fell ill with COVID-19 while working as a teacher in Wuhan, China, and spoke about his experience earlier this year. After recovering, he returned to the UK and went to Bangor University in Wales to continue his studies in Chinese, according to Wales Online.

Connor’s mother, Hayley, confirmed that he was found dead in his college residence, saying in a message on Facebook: “I am saddened to announce that our beautiful son Connor Reed died in a tragic accident at Bangor University over the weekend.”

Hayley, who lives in Brisbane, Australia, told the British press that her son, Connor, has been through a lot in the last year.

I had a lot to endure. In China, he fell ill with Covid and spent a total of more than 20 weeks in strict isolation: 16 weeks of harsh quarantine in Wuhan, two weeks in Australia and another three weeks in the UK.

We are heartbroken that his adventures ended at Bangor University, where he was studying for a degree in Chinese, in a tragic accident, apparentlysaid the young man’s mother.

Connor, from Llandudno, Wales, was infected with the virus in late November 2019, but at the time no one knew anything about the mysterious illness. Because it was one of the first cases, Reed said that little was done with the treatment and that it was because the doctors simply did not know what they were dealing with.

“I didn’t know what it was. Doctors didn’t know what it was. The problem with coronavirus is that you get better and then your condition worsens.”, recounted his experience of returning to the UK.
