The first spring meteor shower can be seen tonight in all its glory. You get to see about 10 “shooting stars” per hour.
The first meteor shower this spring, known as the “Lyrid meteor shower,” started Sunday night and will peak on Wednesday night, CNN writes.
Experts say that since the beginning of January there have been no meteor showers to light up the sky, and the current phenomenon will be visible worldwide.
Unlike last year, the moon is decreasing, and this will allow for a better view of these bright meteorites.
When can they be seen in the sky?
Meteor showers can be seen from midnight to 5:00 a.m., say experts from the American Meteor Society.
Typically, Lyrid meteor showers can have 10-20 meteorites per hour during the “peak”, but it is difficult to estimate how many exactly will be visible.
Meteor shower occurs during this period each year when Earth’s orbit intersects that of Comet Thatcher. The comet loses parts of itself that end up flying in our atmosphere at over 110,000 miles per hour.
