The so-called “R” rate, which indicates the average number of people infected by a single positive case, has increased slightly in the past two weeks, but has remained at a subunit value, Danish officials said.

Governments around the world want the “R” rate to remain in subunit values, which would mean that each infected person transmits the virus to at most one other person, before taking relaxing steps to isolate the population.

Denmark, one of the first countries in Europe to declare a state of emergency, reported 452 deaths from the new coronavirus as of Thursday, while the number of hospitalizations declined steadily in April.
“There are no signs that the partial reopening has caused a further spread of infections,” said Christian Wejse, a researcher with the Department of Infectious Diseases at Aarhus University.

“At least there is no indication that we are headed for another wave of the epidemic. That was the big concern, but today I don’t see such a phenomenon,” he added.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Wednesday that the spread of the new coronavirus was “under control” and that she would present a plan containing next steps to ease the restrictions by May 10.
