“We have an agreement for the multi-year financial framework and the reconstruction package. Now we can begin to implement and rebuild our economies. The historic reconstruction package will drive the digital transition and the green transition,” wrote Charles Michel on Twitter.

Earlier, the leaders of the EU member states met in Brussels for the Winter European Council to try to overcome internal disagreements. There were indications that European leaders had reached an agreement with Poland and Hungary to unlock the EU budget and the economic recovery fund. Other important issues are on the agenda, including the Brexit deal, sanctions against Turkey, and the Union’s coordinated action in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Thursday, upon his arrival at the EU summit, that today’s summit “will be an important one”, adding that after weeks of talks “we are only one inch away from reaching a consensus “on the package. budget and recovery, reports Politico.

In his opinion, the leaders are “very, very close” to reaching a good agreement “for the unity of the European Union”. He added: “Today we fight for the unity of our continent.” Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also said that the EU must adopt the budget and the recovery fund, but there must also be “certainty of legal solutions”.

In the middle of last month, the Polish government joined the Hungarian government in blocking the € 1.8 trillion budget of the European Union and the post-Covid economic recovery fund. The two governments motivated the decision by the fact that the European institutions decided to adopt a mechanism that links the availability of European funds, from which both countries benefit enormously, being net beneficiaries, from respect for the principles of the rule of law. The decision then plunged the European bloc into a new crisis.
