French President Emmanuel Macron tested positive for Covid-19 after he began to develop symptoms of the disease, the BBC reports. The French president isolated himself after the diagnosis.

“The president of the republic was diagnosed today with Covid-19. The test was carried out after the first symptoms appeared”, is shown in the statement issued by the Elysee Palace

The 42-year-old French president was examined after the first symptoms appeared. He will be isolated for 7 days after the test, it is announced in a statement from the French presidency.

Macron will continue to lead the country even after the diagnosis and will work in isolation.

There is no information yet on where Macron contracted the virus or who he took it from, but the French presidential administration has announced that it will identify those with whom Macron came into contact.

The French Prime Minister, Jean Castex, 55, will also go into isolation, being one of the possible direct contacts of the president. He was scheduled to present the country’s vaccination policy in the Senate on Thursday, but this task will now be taken over by the Minister of Health.

Elíseo’s statement did not say whether the president’s wife, 67, also contracted the disease.

Emmanuel Macron is the third leader of a major Western country to fall ill with Covid-19, after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and US President Donald Trump.

France is one of the most affected countries in the European Union and currently has more than 59,000 deaths from Covid-19, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Two days ago, France began gradually easing restrictions and closures imposed at the end of October, but announced that the overnight quarantine measure would be maintained.
