Eddie Van Halen, the legendary guitarist and co-founder of Van Halen, passed away at the age of 65 after a long battle with cancer.

“My father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, lost his long and difficult battle with cancer this morning,” Wolf Van Halen, the artist’s son, wrote on Twitter.

Eddie Van Halen was born in Amsterdam in 1955 and moved to the United States in 1962. Ten years later, he and his brother Alex formed Van Halen with two other artists.

The band broke the barriers of rock music and sold more than 80 million albums worldwide.

Eddie Van Halen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, being considered one of the best guitarists in the world.

Among its elements of virtuosity and originality was tapping, which consists of a specific movement of the left hand on the guitar neck, while the musical note is played continuously with the right.

The guitarist was diagnosed with oral cancer 20 years ago. According to sources close to the musician, over time the cancer cells migrated to the neck area and doctors had to remove them.

Eddie Van Halen suspected that he had developed oral cancer from metal guitar pens, which he had used for over two decades and used to keep in his mouth.

“I used metal, brass and copper pens, which I always kept in my mouth, exactly where I developed tongue cancer. Also, I practically live in a recording studio that is full of electromagnetic energy. That is a theory. We smoke and take a lot of drugs . But my lungs are clean. It is a theory of mine, but the doctors say that it is possible “, said the artist in 2015, according to Agerpres.

In 2000, shortly after she was diagnosed with oral cancer, doctors removed about a third of her tongue.
