Donald Trump announced on Twitter Monday that he had fired Defense Secretary Mark Esper. He will be replaced by Christopher Miller, currently director of the National Counterterrorism Agency, reports CNN.
In recent months, Trump’s relationship with Esper has become significantly more strained, which is why Esper had already been preparing for his resignation for weeks, in an attempt to resign before the president has a chance to fire him in Twitter
Esper fell from grace after Trump said in June that he did not support sending the military to the streets to quell protests against racism sparked by the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.
His comments were described as an attempt to distance himself from Trump’s threats, but brought him dissatisfaction with the president. Esper also had conflicts with the American president over the renaming of the military bases with names of generals of the Confederate States of America, the slave state declared in the south of the country during the American Civil War (1861-1865). At the time, Esper was in favor of changing the names of these bases, but Trump objected.
Mark Esper is the second secretary of defense in the Trump administration. He replaced General James Mattis, who resigned after Trump decided to betray the Kurds who had decisively helped in the fight against ISIS in the Middle East.
Donald Trump lost the presidential election last week to Democratic opponent Joe Biden.
