The legend of Argentine and world football, Diego Armando Maradona, died at the age of 60, after a heart attack, report international news agencies. Maradona is dealing with alcohol addiction, BBC reports.

Earlier this month, Maradona underwent brain surgery to remove a subdural hematoma (blood clot) five days after celebrating his 60th birthday.

“The hematoma could be removed successfully. Diego endured the operation well. He woke up and everything was going well,” announced, at that time, Dr. Leopoldo Luque, a surgeon from the private clinic in the city of Olivos, north of Buenos Aires. Aires, during a press conference.

Maradona had been transferred to the clinic after a first hospitalization in the city of La Plata, 60 km south of the capital, Buenos Aires. The surgery lasted about two hours on Tuesday.

The ex-footballer was later subjected to treatment for alcoholism, for being addicted to alcohol.

Maradona was one of the best footballers in history. Together with the Argentine team (of which he was captain), he won the 1986 World Cup.

“The hand of God” and Maradona’s foot that scored the most beautiful goal in the history of the World Cup

Diego Maradona has played, throughout his career, in clubs such as Barcelona or Napoli. He also won two Serie A titles with Napoli.

In his career, Diego Armando Maradona has scored 34 goals with the Argentine team, in which he has started 91 times. He participated in four editions of the World Cup: 1982 (Spain), 1986 (Mexico), 1990 (Italy) and 1994 (United States).

In the 1986 edition, when Argentina was proclaimed world champion, Maradona remained in the history of football especially for the two goals scored in the quarterfinals with England: the first goal scored by hand (about which Diego Maradona later said that “it was the hand of God”), and the second, considered the most beautiful goal in the history of the World Cup, when he dribbled almost the entire English team before scoring.

In the latter part of his sports career, Maradona also struggled with cocaine addiction. He was suspended for 15 months in 1991, when he tested positive for doping.

Also in 1994, at the United States World Championships, he was excluded from the group after it was discovered that he was doped with ephedrine.

He retired from professional soccer in 1997, when he turned 37.
