Professor Alexandru Rafila explained what discussions there are at WHO level about the start of the school year, but also what the risks are and for whom.
“The greatest danger is for the grandparents. (…) We need to protect the elderly, that was exactly the discussion in the WHO regional office. Children are affected by this disease only to a very small extent, they have mild forms or asymptomatic, only 0.1% of children need hospitalization, but the categories that could take the disease of children must be protected. ” explained Prof. Dr. Alexandru Rafila.
However, there are also children at risk. “There is a category of children, those with certain chronic diseases, immunosuppressed for example, where the risk of infection is serious,” said Alexandru Rafila.
Overweight children are also at risk. Although parents can try to protect them from the virus by keeping them at home, Alexandru Rafila points out that in the case of overweight children he cannot recommend that they go to school online. “They will become OBESE, due to lack of physical activity. Even going to school is a physical activity and should be encouraged.” Alexandru Rafila thinks.
