Syria reacted on Wednesday after US President Donald Trump confessed the day before that he was considering “eliminating” Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, calling the US a “thug and criminal” state, reports AFP.

Trump said Tuesday that he was considering “eliminating” al-Assad in 2017, but Pentagon chief Jim Mattis has objected ever since.

“The statements of the head of the US administration clearly show the level of reckless political practices” of the United States, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday, quoted by the local news agency Sana.

“(Donald) Trump’s confession confirms that the US administration is a rogue and criminal state, using the same methods as terrorist organizations, with assassinations and liquidations,” the ministry added.

Trump told Fox News on Tuesday that he would have “preferred to eliminate” Al-Assad, saying he “saw this was planned” after the April 2017 chemical attack attributed to the Syrian regime.

“Mattis didn’t want to do it. Mattis was a very overrated general and I broke up with him,” added the president of the United States.

In September 2018, Donald Trump declared otherwise, stating that he never discussed the possible assassination of President Al-Assad with the Pentagon chief.

The conflict in Syria, which erupted after the crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations, has grown complicated over the years, involving various foreign powers and armed groups. The war has left more than 380,000 dead and millions displaced to date.

Thanks to the military support of Russia and Iran, its loyal allies, the Syrian regime currently controls more than two-thirds of the country’s territory, after numerous victories against rebels and jihadists.
