Daily deaths from COVID-19 increased nearly 40% compared to the previous week, according to the World Health Organization.

WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris said France, Spain, Britain, the Netherlands and Russia had the highest number of cases, increasing by a third in Europe, according to Mediafax.

“The concern is that intensive care units in hospitals are now starting to fill up with very sick people,” he warned.

Dr. Harris said that the effectiveness of the new restrictions imposed in several European countries could be analyzed in just two weeks.

“We will see a reduction in cases, but we will not see it overnight,” the WHO spokesman said.

Belgium is on the brink of disaster. A senior health official warned that the country could run out of intensive care beds in just two weeks.

The country with 11.5 million inhabitants has reported an average of more than 13,000 cases a day in the last week, according to the Sciensano National Institute of Public Health. The COVID-19 outbreak in Belgium is the second worst in Europe in terms of new cases per capita, after the Czech Republic.

Yves Van Laethem, spokesman for the Belgian anti-coronavirus group, warned that if the Belgians did not change their behavior, intensive care units would reach 2,000 patients in 15 days.
