The Covid-19 tracking system enters the testing phase. Apple and Google have begun testing the COVID-19 Exposure Notification API. A full launch is expected in mid-May.
Apple and Google say that after joint efforts to help public health authorities trace the spread of COVID-19, testing is beginning. Companies will release an initial version of the Exposure Notification API to a small number of developers. The latter are working on applications for public health organizations and will take the tests in the coming weeks. The API is expected to launch widely in mid-May.
Covid-19 tracking system: Google and Apple will not record location data
The giants announced their collaboration earlier this month. The project, which requires the user’s consent, will use Bluetooth. The objective is to track possible exposures to cases confirmed by COVID-19.

Smartphones will record situations where devices are close to other devices for a long time. Both companies claim they will not record location data. When a person is diagnosed with COVID-19, the API will allow public health agencies to quickly inform other people who may have been in contact with the patient.
Information about patient identities and locations is not shared with Apple or Google.
Companies and developers are preparing to adopt the new system.
Apple today releases a beta version of Xcode 11.5 and the third beta version of iOS 13.5. The first includes development tools to create iOS applications that incorporate the API. The second includes the code necessary to run future applications from public health authorities. Google has released similar updates through Google Play and Android Developer Studio.
Public health authorities will monitor what they consider to be a possible exposure. Therefore, the API will be used to account for the approximate distance of the devices and how close they were to each other. Both are calculated on users’ phones and are not shared with companies.
Apple and Google will launch a code example on Friday that aims to show developers how to create applications using the system. In the second phase of the project, which is expected in the coming months, the exposure notification will be created directly on iOS and Android.
