Scotland will enter a new lockdown from midnight until the end of January, the Scottish chief executive announced on Monday, according to the BBC. Nicola Sturgeon announced the move on Monday, against the backdrop of the new strain of Covid-19 spreading uncontrollably across the UK and the pressure on the British healthcare system mounting.
Sturgeon says that in the absence of such harsh measures, hospitals would exceed capacity in the next three to four weeks.
With the new restrictions, people will no longer be able to leave their homes without good reason and, in all cases where possible, they will return to work from home. Churches will be closed, group sports activities will also be banned, and schools will switch back to online mode. The rules will apply throughout Scotland until at least the end of January.
Scotland, like the rest of the UK, is facing a higher number of Covid-19 cases due to the new strain of the virus. In the last 24 hours, the positive rate in Scotland has been around 15%.
Sturgeon said the current situation is the most worrying since the start of the pandemic.
