The measures will take effect on Wednesday at midnight (23:00 GMT) for six weeks, the prime minister said in a televised speech, while stressing that schools will remain open. All non-essential commercial activities will be closed and bars and restaurants will only serve packaged food, the head of government said. “We ask everyone in the country to stay home,” added Micheal Martin.
Only people with a job deemed essential will have “permission to go to work,” he said.
Furthermore, the Irish will only be able to leave their houses to move within a radius of five kilometers from the house, otherwise they run the risk of receiving fines.
Schools and kindergartens will remain open “because we cannot and will not allow the future of our children and young people to be one more victim of this disease,” the Irish Prime Minister said.
Visits between different addresses and indoor events will be prohibited, although indoor professional sports will be allowed.
Irish measures are “possibly the toughest in Europe”, but “additional action is needed today,” admitted the prime minister.
“If we join forces over the next six weeks, we can celebrate Christmas properly,” he said.
The coronavirus pandemic has killed at least 1,852 people in Ireland, according to the latest official figures.
