Sentenced to three years in prison on Friday for the wrongful death of a patient, doctor Călin Doboş, the so-called “star surgeon”, tried to flee the country.

He was captured at 3 a.m. at Nadlac customs and sent directly into custody. The decision of the judges also includes the suspension of the right to free practice, because the doctor declared liposuction illegal 7 years ago, although he did not have a license. One patient died shortly after the operation due to complications.

7 years ago, a 36-year-old woman from Brăila was operated on at the private clinic of the doctor Călin Doboş, from Galaţi. Shortly after the operation, he presented to the county hospital because he felt very ill and after 20 days he died. The judgment of the Court of Appeal sentenced him to 3 years in prison with execution and the prohibition of the right to exercise for 4 years.

The woman’s relatives decided to open a civil lawsuit for damages worth 1 million euros, which she would use to care for her daughter, a young woman with a disability.

Victim’s mother: “It just came to our attention then. Now, in February, I have to prepare for the alms. I have no money.”

Daniel Ciuraru, brother of the victim: “We chose the whole family like this, with immense suffering. With a child left alone, without a mother, without a father and with a second degree disability.

In fact, just as the order was leaving Galaţi for Bucharest, for the doctor to be picked up from his new home and detained, he was heading to Nădlac customs. The police caught him just as he was trying to leave the country.

Ionuţ Matei, spokesperson for the Border Police: “When carrying out specific controls, it was found that a judicial order was issued in the name of the person to execute the prison sentence of December 11, for the commission of the crime of culpable homicide.”

The necropsy performed on the patient who received liposuction by Dr. Doboş showed that, during the operation, he had perforated her intestine. The removal of the adipose layer from the abdominal region is, in fact, the most extensive cosmetic intervention that is requested. A good doctor is formed after at least a hundred interventions, because one of the risks is perforating the lungs or intestines. In this case, the woman was discharged, she stayed home in great pain, and by the time she got to the hospital it was too late.

The doctor always claimed that he was not guilty of anything. In addition, he claimed that the fault lay with the patient, who had hidden her medical history.

Călin Doboș: “He had another operation for peritonitis a few years ago, twice he ingested pills in large quantities, which in turn can create perforations. Plus an operation for an abdominal wall tumor ”.

Since then, controls have shown that the doctor was licensed only for maxillofacial surgery, not for plastic surgery, where he was only a resident. The Directorate of Public Health has clearly said that liposuction cannot be performed, with general medicine as training.

However, in the 7 years of trials, the doctor continued to exercise undisturbed. Ten days after the woman’s death, the inspectors closed the clinic where he had operated on her and fined her 5,000 lei. With a padlock on the door of the Galaţi office, the doctor moved to Bucharest, opened another clinic and managed to become one of the so-called “famous surgeons”, performing interventions, until recently, on several well-known people from the entertainment world.
