Economica.net analyzed the pensions of the public pension system in September 2020, the first month in which the increase in the pension point is reflected, compared to the same month in 2019.
These are the most important conclusions:
We have a significant decrease in the proportion of people with pensions of up to 1,000 gross lei.
A third of pensioners in the public pension system received a maximum of 1,000 gross lei for retirement in September 2020, according to the analysis carried out by Economica.net.

More than 51,000 civilians received, according to the principle of contributivity, a pension of more than 5,000 gross lei in September 2020, compared to less than 23,000 people – in September 2019, according to the comparison made by Economica.net.
- After increasing the pension point, only 1% of pensioners in the public system managed to receive a pension of more than 5,000 gross lei, compared to 0.45% of pensioners in September 2019.
How to tax pensions
The value of 2,000 lei is deducted from the gross pension, which is not taxable. A 10% income tax is applied to the result obtained. The value obtained is deducted from the gross amount of the pension. The result is a net pension.
Specifically, a gross pension of 3,000 lei means a net pension of 2,900 lei. How we got to this result: 3000 lei minus 2000 lei (non-taxable value, according to the law) equal to 1000 lei.
10% of 1000 lei means 100 lei. 3000 lei minus 100 lei equals 2900 net lei.
More than 4.93 million people received a pension in the public pension system in September 2020, compared with almost 4.96 million in September 2019.
