Collective at the Oscars! Finally, Romania is nominated, and Gazeta Sportulor is the world’s first sports publication to hit the red carpet!

  • The 93rd Academy Awards Gala will take place on April 25 in Los Angeles.
  • In the US, “Colectiv” can be seen on Hulu, in Romania on HBO Go.

In the 65 years since countries submitted their Oscar nominations, only three documentaries had received International Film nominations. Collective will be, in 2021, the fourth documentary in history to fight, at International Film, for a gold statuette.

We are attending, as The New York Times wrote, the most unpredictable edition of the Oscars yet, due to the pandemic. The announcement of the nomination, following the election of thousands of Oscar voters from more than 90 countries, is, in many ways, historical for Romania.

  • It is the first time that Romania, after 35 years of trying, is nominated for an Oscar.
  • It is also the first time that a Romanian film has been nominated for an Oscar or a BAFTA, the British Academy of Film Awards.
  • It’s the first time we’ve received a double nomination and the second in Oscar history, after Honeyland, when a documentary has two nominations.

Generations of creators of our cinema have been waiting for this moment since Romania submitted proposals to the American Film Academy. Impressive names of the director, such as Andrei Ujică, Lucian Pintilie, Nae Caranfil, Adina Pintilie, Cristi Mungiu, Cristi Puiu, Corneliu Porumboiu or Radu Jude, also see his work crowned because the international press has realized that all his films, especially that of the new wave, created the perception of a film school and a social reality “from which Colectiv came out, overwhelmingly, like a blow.”

And last but not least, this is the first time that a Romanian newspaper and the investigations of the journalists here receive such recognition, at a global elite level, that, in general, only fiction films, such as Spotlight, reached. .

The need for the press when we live “diluting the truth in an ocean of stimuli”

“In the end, Colectiv does not decree winners or losers, but emphasizes the progressive erosion of trust in a democratic system and the way in which dilution of responsibilities creates monsters,” the Italian website wrote the other day. Cinephilia rediscovered about Alexander Nanau’s movie.

With a moderation of exposition and an analytical sagacity that would make Noam Chomsky envious, he presents a sad collection of strategies of mass distraction: hiding, calming, covering, blaming, spreading mud and finally diluting the truth in an ocean of stimuli ”, sounds the conclusion of the chronicle of Rome.

Similar praise for the Collective came from all over the world, from the Philippines to Canada and from Greece to Mongolia, Great Britain or France, and the courage of the families of the victims, of the people who spoke to the press gave Romania an image complimentary, rewarded with today’s nomination.

It is something extraordinary! Collective is the most complete documentary. From the point of view of a passionate movie buff, it is the most original. It surprises many areas of Romanian life. The fact that a publisher reveals some truths has always worked when it comes to movies. I think we have a very good chance in this category. We are talking about a documentary that does not stop at the Colectiv drama. In the best international movie, Another Round, it’s great. In this category we have to keep the fists of our film, but in the documentary I think it is one of the favorites.
