A statement from ALDE announced on Monday night the resignation of the president of this party, Călin Popescu Tăriceanu. The former prime minister of Romania has led the party since 2015, when it was founded.

The decision is explained by the fact that the party is preparing to merge with PRO Romania, Victor Ponta’s party.

The merger protocol between ALDE and PRO Romania was approved by the party leadership on October 8 and will be validated at the Extraordinary Congress to be held on November 8.

“The procedures for the organization of the parliamentary elections on December 6 establish that the deadline for submitting the lists for the parliamentary elections is October 22. The legal provisions in the event of a merger of two parties bind ALDE and PRO Romania to stand on a common list, and the decision of the ALDE Permanent Delegation to approve the merger with PRO Romania implies the obligation of all candidates in the parliamentary elections to run on the PRO Romania list. This implies assuming the quality of member of the PRO Romania party. This obligation is of all ALDE members who will stand for parliamentary elections and is also addressed to the president of ALDE, Călin Popescu Tăriceanu “, is reflected in the ALDE statement.

The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) was founded on June 19, 2015 by the merger of the Liberal Reform Party with the Conservative Party. The first elections in which ALDE participated were the local elections in 2016, ranking third, after the Social Democratic Party and the National Liberal Party. After the parliamentary elections of the same year, ALDE managed to gain access to the Romanian Legislature, obtaining 29 seats (9 members of the Senate, 20 members of the Chamber of Deputies). Following the vote on December 11, 2016, ALDE formed a governing coalition together with the Social Democratic Party.

In the local elections on September 27, 2020, ALDE obtained less than 3 percent of the votes and PRO Romania a little less than 5 percent.

To enter Parliament, a party must cross the 5% threshold.

The leaders of PRO Romania and ALDE decided, on October 8, to merge the two parties. In the parliamentary elections, the ALDE candidates will be on the list of PRO Romania, and the new party will be called Pro Romania Social Liberal, Victor Ponta announced.
