From now on, negotiations for the formation of a majority begin. Since no party won more than 50% of the vote, alliances must be formed to appoint a new government.
Right now, the president of the PNL, Ludovic Orban, is in the Cotroceni Palace, where he is discussing with President Klaus Iohannis about the results of the parliamentary elections on December 6.
The Romanian Constitution provides one thing very clear: if after the elections there is a party that has obtained an absolute majority, that is, 50% plus one, it will appoint the prime minister. However, none of the parties that stood in the parliamentary elections on December 6, 2020 achieved such a result.
Therefore, the President of Romania can appoint the Prime Minister from a government coalition. Most likely, the right-wing PNL and USR parties will ally to rule more.
A question mark comes from the PMP, of which it is not known for sure if it will enter Parliament. However, from the data we have, it seems that those of the PMP will manage to reach the electoral threshold of 5%, so they will probably arrive at the government with PNL and USR.
It will be an alliance that will not reach half plus one of the number of parliamentarians, so it will not be able to carry out the structural reforms that President Klaus Iohannis wants, much less the constitutional reform that the Head of State demands.
On the other hand, PSD, which obtained almost 30% of the electorate’s votes, announced on Sunday night that it does not exclude an alliance with GOLDAlthough this new party has already stated that it does not want to enter into any political alliance. Therefore, PSD could remain in opposition for the next 4 years.
These are the current political calculations, but certainly an important word to say will have President Klaus Iohannis, who will call the parties to Cotroceni to discuss, first the NLP, then the other parliamentary parties.
