The British group Ineos, controlled by billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, famous for supporting the Brexit campaign, has decided to build its first car in a factory in France. He gave up his previous plans to build a plant in Britain.

In September 2019, the Ineos group announced that it would form an automobile division that would assemble a land-based model called the Grenadier in a plant to be built in Wales, creating 500 jobs.

But in July of this year, Ineos decided to review its investments after the pandemic that created a series of new opportunities, Agerpres reports.

Ineos confirmed this Tuesday that it will take over the Hambach plant (France) belonging to the Daimler group, where it will build the future Grenadier 4X4 model.

“Hambach has provided us with a unique opportunity that we simply could not ignore – to purchase a modern automobile production facility with a world-class workforce,” said Jim Ratcliffe, president of the Ineos group. -Press release.

Production of the future Grenadier 4X4 is scheduled to start at the end of next year and furthermore, under an agreement with Daimler, Ineos Automotive will continue to produce the small city car EQ fortwo in Hambach, as well as certain components from Mercedes-Benz. The Ineos investment will maintain approximately 1,300 jobs at a plant in France.

Jim Ratcliffe, owner of a fortune valued at 20 billion dollars, was one of the most vehement supporters of the campaign for Britain’s exit from the European Union.

Following the 2016 referendum, the British car industry was one of the hardest hit by uncertainties about the future of trade relations between the UK and the EU, its main export market.
