Britain follows the model of France. Boris Johnson has announced a four-week national quarantine

UPDATE 21.00 Prime Minister Boris Johnson delivered a speech Saturday night in which he announced Britain’s re-entry into quarantine after the country went through one million cases of Covid-19.

Johnson noted that the measures he says will last until early December (December 2).

Bars, pubs and restaurants will close, while takeaway will remain open. Essential stores will remain open so that “supplies are not needed,” and jobs must remain open where people cannot work from home.

Unlike the first national quarantine, schools, colleges and universities will be able to remain open.

“We cannot allow this virus to affect the future of our children more than it already has,” says Johnson. He urged parents to continue sending their children to school.

The prime minister listed some of the exceptions for which people can leave their homes:

  • for education
  • to work, if you can’t work from home
  • for exercise and outdoor recreation
  • for medical reasons
  • buy food and essentials
  • take care of others

THE INITIAL NEWS

Non-essential shops and hospitality businesses (restaurants, terraces, clubs) will have to close for four weeks, sources told the BBC.

But unlike the spring restrictions, schools, colleges and universities will be able to remain open.

The documents suggest that the UK is heading for a much higher number of deaths than during the first wave.

The government now faces a critical weekend to determine the form of measures before an announcement. Prime Minister Boris Johnson plans to hold a press conference with the new restrictions beginning on Wednesday.

Prime Minister and Chancellor Rishi Sunak have been reluctant to make a decision due to fears about the economic impact of such a move. But the scientists, backed by Health Secretary Matt Hancock, told them the virus was poised to kill 85,000 this winter and that it was too late for the so-called “circuit quarantine.”

They called for a longer national lockdown, similar to the one-month lockdown in France, saying it was the only way to prevent the medical system from collapsing.

A government source told The Times that a final decision on the new quarantine measures has yet to be made.

Andy Street, the conservative mayor of the West Midlands, said it was clear that more action was needed. He added: “The message is very clear: we have to take more steps to change this coronavirus trend.”
