No increase in the pension point above what has been achieved so far will be allowed, Finance Minister Florin Cîţu said on Monday on the Bucharest Stock Exchange, according to Agerpres.

“Because we are in the capital market and many investors look at us. I also need to send a message to investors. We had several discussions last week and we have to explain what is happening today in the Romanian Parliament because there is concern that the opposition, the Socialists, are again raising the 40% increase in the pension point.

This is after the Government has once again done something unique in the European Union, and I think in the world, increase spending on pensions, on benefits, at a time when we are going through the greatest economic crisis. And I want to assure both investors and rating agencies, and those in the capital markets, that this government will not allow, and the Prime Minister is here, he will not allow the change in pension point this year.

It is still what we establish in the budget rectification. We will not allow an increase in the pension point this year over what could be done at this time. It is also the message of the Prime Minister and it is also the message that I am giving here today because we should not have these concerns in the capital market. We guarantee that we will manage public finances, and this is a message also for the president, responsibly and cautiously, “said Florin Cîţu.

14% increase from September 1, 2020

The value of the pension point increased by 14% from September 1, 2020, respectively, from 1,265 lei to 1,442 lei.

Last week the budget committees of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate delivered an approval report with amendments to the budget rectification, with 20 votes “in favor” and one “against.”

The most important amendment approved by the commissions was the one that repeals the article according to which the pension point is increased by 14%, leaving the law of the public pension system in force, which provides for its increase by 40%.

The Romanian capital market has been included in the indices of the global index provider FTSE Russell for emerging markets since September 21, 2020.

The moment is marked by the Bucharest Stock Exchange on Monday, through an official opening of the trading session attended by all the BVB partners with whom this historic moment could be achieved, state institutions, regulators and partners. institutional. Finance Minister Florin Cîţu is also present at the event.
