Coronavirus France
French health authorities reported 8,975 new cases on Friday, setting a record level of daily infections since the disease began to spread in the country in late winter.
The number of people hospitalized for the disease, while still well below the peak of 32,292 on April 14, rose for the sixth day in a row to 4,671.
The number of people in France who have died from COVID-19 infections has reached 30,686, and the cumulative number of cases now stands at 309,156.
Coronavirus: Spain
Spain approached half a million coronavirus cases on Friday.
Authorities recorded 4,503 new infections, reaching 498,989, the highest in Western Europe.
The new wave of contagion is less deadly than at the beginning of the pandemic.
The death rate remains well below the March-April peak, when deaths typically exceeded 800 per day. The Health Ministry reported 19 deaths on Friday, bringing the total to 29,148.
With schools resuming next week and many adults returning to work, the latest spike in coronavirus cases has raised concerns and some confusion.
“In Madrid everyone wears a mask, we maintain social distance, there are no discos, so I don’t know what the problem is,” Professor Maribel Cimas told Reuters.
The Madrid region, which accounts for just under a third of the 101,962 cases diagnosed in the past two weeks, said it would impose stricter restrictions starting Monday, extending a national limit of 10 people to public gatherings to cover private parties.
“The situation is stable and under control, but that does not mean that we are not worried,” said the regional health chief, Enrique Ruiz Escudero, at a press conference.
At the national level, the Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, urged the Spanish to follow the regulations and announced that Spain will launch a national study of antibodies in the autumn to determine the prevalence of the virus among the population.
An earlier study from July showed that around 5% of Spaniards were exposed to the virus and despite recent spikes.
Coronavirus Italy
Italy recorded 1,733 new coronavirus cases on Friday, the largest daily increase since May 2, The Guardian reports.
Veneto, which during the quarantine in Italy was praised for its rapid fight against the virus, recorded the highest number of new cases, 373, mainly due to an outbreak at a meat factory in Treviso.
There were 171 new confirmed cases in Lazio (106 in Rome).
More than 113,000 coronavirus tests have been performed in the last 24 hours, 21,000 more than on Thursday.
Hospitalizations have also increased in recent weeks, with 1,607 people in treatment, of which 121 are in intensive care.
Coronavirus Great Britain
The UK recorded 1,940 daily COVID-19 cases, the highest daily toll since May 30, health officials said on Friday.
The daily number of cases increased by about 1,000 a day for most of August, but has started to rise further in recent days.
Testing capacity in the UK has also increased since the peak of the first wave in the spring.
