EU foreign ministers failed to overcome the diplomatic stalemate and impose sanctions on Belarus on Monday, despite calls from Minsk opposition leader Svetlana Tihanovskaia.

The head of European diplomacy, Joseph Borell, indicated “a clear will to adopt sanctions”, but the necessary unanimity was not reached. “If we cannot (pass the sanctions), our credibility is at stake,” he told a news conference.

Cyprus has insisted that it will accept sanctions only if the EU takes similar action against Turkey in the context of tensions in the eastern Mediterranean.

Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu, together with the majority, called for Belarus to be sanctioned as soon as possible and announced to his counterparts that Bucharest supports an OSCE mission to mediate the dialogue between the Minsk government and the opposition. .

The EU announced in late August that it would block assets and ban the travel of Belarusian officials.
