The Craiova Court of Appeal issued this Wednesday the final sentence of Sandu Anghel, known as Bercea Mondialu, to 13 years and 272 days in prison for an assassination attempt committed in 2009 against the former Deputy Mayor of Slatina, Valeriu Matei, the Craiova court upholds the decision of the court of first instance, on the criminal side, the Court of Olt, issued a year ago. In the same case, Laurenţiu Anghel, Sandu Anghel’s son, was sentenced to 9 years and 6 months in prison, Agerpres reports.

Instead, the Craiova Court of Appeal decided to reduce the amount of moral damage that defendant Anghel Sandu must pay to his victim, Valeriu Matei, from € 40,000 to € 10,000.

Bercea Mondialu and her son, who were released on parole, are thus returned to prison.

Sandu Anghel was released from prison in February 2019, serving a sentence of 8 years and 9 months for stabbing his nephew, and Laurenţiu Anghel was arrested for complicity in a robbery.

In this case, Sandu Anghel and her son, Laurenţiu, were sent to trial in 2018 by the prosecutors of the General Prosecutor’s Office, for attempting the crime of aggravated homicide. The incident took place on January 22, 2009, in Slatina, where the former deputy mayor of the municipality, Valeriu Matei, was beaten by Bercea with a knife, in the midst of a spontaneous conflict generated by misunderstandings about the land. In the same context, Valeriu Matei, as well as a man accompanying him, were run over by Laurenţiu Anghel with a car.

As a result of the altercation, both people suffered traumatic injuries that endangered their lives, one of them required 12 to 13 days of medical attention to heal, and the other 80 to 90 days.
