A debate: at least one in an election campaign helps voters really get to know the candidates. In a hostile environment, the politician shows his true face. A debate raises some candidates and destroys others. It’s the golden moment of the campaign and it gives voters hope that at least the one they want to vote for is brave. It is not necessary. Digi24’s proposed debate turned into a test of courage. This is how the four main candidates for the City Council of the capital performed in this test: Gabriela Firea, Nicușor Dan, Traian Băsescu and Călin Popescu Tăriceanu.
Tonight, the four candidates for the capital City Council should have been in the Digi24 studio. According to the President of Romania, the Mayor of Bucharest is the most legitimately elected position by direct suffrage in the country. The mayor general has a large number of votes behind him. Only the president of the republic has more.
Digi24 found that people who want that many votes have every reason to bravely present themselves to voters, including to stand up in a debate.
However, the candidates want to be elected, but they do not want to answer questions and above all they do not want to enter into a direct and direct confrontation. With one exception: throughout the organization of this debate, ALDE’s candidate, Călin Popescu Tăriceanu, answered “yes” to Digi24’s proposals.
Traian Băsescu initially said “yes”, then announced that he would like to enter the debate from a distance. Gabriela Firea and Nicuşor Dan chatted with Digi24 journalists from one end to the other. To what extent some people who refuse to debate can lead a city of the complexity of the Romanian capital will be decided by yourself.
“Some candidates did not feel prepared. Mr. Tariceanu, with very few possibilities, needed a debate, because it could have helped him, it could have prompted him. The other three felt that the debate could bring them fewer points, and then they refused, both you and others The debate will not take place.
We already have the precedent of the presidential elections, when the debate did not take place, “said political scientist Cristian Pîrvulescu.
Each of the candidates has other arguments, but they all led to this situation. On the one hand, we know that in opinion polls two candidates, Gabriela Firea and Nicușor Dan, are shoulder to shoulder. Statistically, the differences are irrelevant and on Sunday almost anything can happen, so a confrontation can bring positive or negative points, so it is better not to have it. That was the reasoning of those who gave advice in the campaign and the candidates considered it very good, “he explained.
