Banksy-funded rescue ship stranded in Mediterranean, with over 200 migrants on board

The ship that state artist Banksy funded to rescue immigrants from the Mediterranean is close to declaring a state of emergency.

The European authorities refuse to help them, while 89 refugees are on board and the boat is towing a rubber boat carrying another 130 refugees, many of them tired and injured.

Due to the overcrowded deck, the ship can no longer move in the same parameters. So far, an Italian ship, the Great Jonie, has answered the call from the lifeboat Louise Michel. “The help we can provide to these people makes the difference between life and death,” said the captain of the Great Jonie, condemning the ignorance of the Italian and Maltese coastguards.

“These people are survivors and you are turning your back on them, the EU. After escaping the horrors and cruelty, they need security. You have to take a stand now!” Louise Michel posted on her Twitter account.

So far, more than 500 dead refugees have been discovered in the Mediterranean.

Louise Michel’s container is named after a French feminist and is painted pink and white, and one of Banksy’s iconic works is painted on the side of the cabin. On the ship’s Twitter page, people can follow the rescue mission in real time.
