Despite having a history of more than 100 years, the Serbian club is in its first participation in European cups! The good results of the last year have been generated, to a large extent, by the Hungarian Government, which has invested significant sums in Backa Topola, a city of 30,000 inhabitants, of which 57% are ethnic Hungarians. The situation of the club that will face the FCSB in the Europa League is similar to that of Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe or Csikszereda Miercurea Ciuc, if we refer to Romanian football.
Backa Topola, a club “reborn” thanks to investments in Budapest
Almost three years ago, on September 27, 2017, Viktor Orban, the Prime Minister of Hungary, was present at Backa Topola for the inauguration of an Academy, in which the Government of Budapest invested approximately 9,500,000 euros.
The sports complex in the city of the FCSB opponent in the Europa League consists of a central arena, four grass training pitches, a hotel to house the athletes, a gym and modern recovery equipment, Balkaninsight announced at the time. .
Shortly after the involvement of the Budapest government, Backa Topola appointed a coach with dual nationality, Serbian and Hungarian, Zoltan Sabo, who led the team to the first league and, for fourth place, to qualification for the European cups . The owner of the Serbian club is also ethnic Hungarian, Szabolcs Palagy.
Two wins in the first six stages of the championship
Like FCSB, Backa Topola is in full swing, but compared to the “red-blues”, the Serbs have already played six rounds. In the first official matches of the new season of the first league in Serbia, the FCSB rival recorded two victories, 3-1 with Rad and 5-1 with Zlatibor, two draws, 2-2 with Vojvodina and 1-1 with Backa, and two losses, 2-3 with Metalac and 0-5 with Red Star Belgrade.
The Serbian team, who returned two seasons ago in the First Division, have a lot with a cumulative value of 10,000,000 euros, a third of the total market share of the FCSB players. Of the current Serbian team, the top-ranked footballers are Nedad Lukic, a 27-year-old attacking midfielder, and top-ranked Vladimir Siladji, who scored 16 goals last season.
Throughout its history of more than 100 years, Backa Topola has failed to win any major trophies in Serbia and ranks first in the preliminaries of the European Cup.
