Baku and Yerevan signed a ceasefire agreement in Nagorno-Karabakh on November 9, after six weeks of violent armed clashes that have given Azerbaijan major territorial conquests, thus reclaiming areas over which it has been out of control for decades.

The Armenians “have destroyed everything here and will be held accountable in international courts,” threatened Aliev, pointing to the ruined landscape of Djebrail.
“Look what the enemy has done in the city of Djebrail. Their goal was that the Azeris never come back here, but we will live here. We have returned to our homeland,” he said.
Nagorno-Karabakh, a region with a predominantly Armenian population, has been de facto independent from Azerbaijan since the 1990s, after a war that left 30,000 dead and hundreds of thousands displaced.
This year’s armed clashes, the most violent in nearly 30 years, have allowed Azerbaijan to retake part of Nargorno Karabah, as well as seven neighboring districts, which were a security shield for Armenian separatists.
Four of these districts, including Djebrail et Fizuli, have been recaptured militarily, and the other three are to be handed over to Baku between November 20 and December 1.
The ceasefire agreement, signed under the auspices of Moscow, provides for the deployment of some 2,000 soldiers to keep the peace in Nagorno Karabakh.
