Mexican authorities in the state of Guanajuato have found at least 59 bodies, most of which are buried when they were teenagers, the BBC reports.

The remains of the 59 corpses, most of them belonging to young people, were found in unmarked graves near the town of Salvatierra. Authorities believe it could be the bodies of teenagers.

The area where the macabre discovery was made is known as one of the most violent in the country, where drug cartels fight for control of the roads. In fact, in the state of Guanajuato alone, at least 2,200 crimes were registered in the first eight months of 2020.

Karla Quintana, head of the National Commission for the Search for Missing Persons in Mexico, said that at least 10 of the people buried there were women.

A team of more than 80 people began investigating based on information that was not publicly specified.

The state of Guanajuato is known for violence between criminal groups. In July, gunmen entered a drug rehabilitation center and killed 24 people. Just a month earlier, a similar attack had occurred in the same city.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who came to power at the end of 2018, promised to reduce the violence. However, crime figures reached a record in 2019.
