On Thursday, at the start of the government meeting, President Klaus Iohannis demanded the closure of schools across the country, as a measure to control the spread of the coronavirus.
TO UPDATE – Prime Minister Ludovic Orban explained, on Thursday night, the reasons why they will close schools across the country.
“There are two reasons why we decided to switch schools to the red stage: child safety, and secondly, the fact that many adolescents are asymptomatic and become carriers of the virus. Switching schools online is a temporary solution. The measures so far have not worked “, said Orban, in Digi 24, when they asked him to explain what are the new measures that will be imposed in Romania, according to a Decision that is analyzed, on Thursday afternoon, at the Government meeting.
At the beginning of the government meeting, Klaus Iohannis stated that stronger measures are needed to control the spread of the pandemic in Romania.
These include the transition of all schools in Romania to the red stage, the restriction of traffic at night, the closure of shops after 9:00 p.m., the closing of markets and fairs and the obligation to wear a mask throughout the country.
In turn, Prime Minister Ludovic Orban specified, at the Government meeting, that the new measures requested by Klaus Iohannis must be transposed into a Government Decision, which will enter into force on Monday, November 9.
The government meeting that will decide the new restrictions to be imposed in Romania is currently taking place at the Victoria Palace.
Are schools closing in Romania? The reaction of the National Student Council
The National Council of Students announced Thursday night, in a statement, that it disapproves of the measure announced by President Klaus Iohannis on the closure of schools in Romania.
At the opening of the Government meeting tonight, the President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, declared that all educational units must be closed, requiring the transition of the educational act exclusively online. The National Student Council strongly disapproves of this proposal, as many schools in Romania are located in communities where the transmission rate of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is well below the incidence of 3 per thousand inhabitants. In order to guarantee a quality educational act, it is important that in these communities the school units remain open, in compliance with all security measures “, shows a press release from the Student Council.
At the same time, the transition of the entire education system to an exclusively online format shows deep irresponsibility on the part of state authorities, given that hundreds of thousands of students in Romania still do not have access to online courses due to lack of digital infrastructure. . , also indicates the cited source.
We consider that the proposal of the President of Romania is unfounded at this time. We are certainly going through a period of crisis, but it is important to bear in mind that the school is one of the institutions that underlies our society. For this reason, we again request the test of all students, based on a program such as “Test in the schoolyard”, in order to guarantee the safe participation in classes of all our classmates, in communities where the rate of transmission of the virus allows it “.said Rareş Voicu, president of the National Student Council.
Schools are closed in the capital until November 16
On Monday, November 2, the Bucharest Municipal Committee for Emergency Situations decided to extend for two weeks all the restrictions that are currently in force.
The prefect of the Capital, Traian Berbeceanu, announced that the measures have been extended, considering the contagion rate accumulated in the last 14 days.
Thus, schools will continue to operate online until November 16 inclusive. “The only normal and natural decision was for the activities to continue online,” Traian Berbeceanu said.
“It simply came to our attention then. It is not normal to overregulate, as long as I and my colleagues on the Committee appreciate that the measures already established are not applied well enough,” added the prefect of the Capital, specifying that the authorities will concentrate to better observe these measures.
