Naturalist experts in New Mexico have announced that birds in the region are dying in alarming numbers, possibly “hundreds of thousands,” after many residents reported bodies in various locations, writes NBC.

Martha Desmond, a professor at New Mexico State University, said: “It seems to be an unprecedented and very large number.”

In a video posted by the Las Cruces Sun News, journalist Austin Fisher shows a group of dozens of dead birds he discovered while walking on Sept. 13 in the Rio Arriba district of upstate, News.ro reports.

Such reports came from all over the state. “I can easily say that it could be hundreds of thousands of birds,” he said.

Several agencies are investigating, including the Bureau of Land Management and White Sands Missile Range, a military unit in the area.

“He was able to find less than half a dozen birds in a week’s range,” said Trish Butler, a polygon biologist. “We had a few hundred in the last week, so that really caught our attention.”

Researchers are not clear why the birds are dying, and Desmond says this may be due to a cold air front that hit New Mexico last week or a recent drought, but that the death may be related to Western fires.

“It is possible that the lungs of the birds were affected. It is possible that he forced them to migrate earlier.”

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife wrote on Twitter that “not much is known about the impact of smoke and fire on birds.”

Scientists ask the public to report in a database if they detect dead birds and bring them to study.
