In an emotional speech, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for compliance with restrictions and deterrents before the holidays, so that the number of coronavirus cases does not get out of control. He urged the introduction of new restrictions until mid-January throughout Germany, where existing measures have proven insufficient to limit the number of contamination with the new type of coronavirus, reports AFP, assumed by Agerpres.
“The number of contacts” between people “is too high, the reduction in the number of contacts is insufficient,” Angela Merkel declared Wednesday in the Chamber of Deputies.
The Federal Chancellor considers justified the proposals of a group of experts aimed at closing, no later than Christmas and mid-January, all non-food stores and schools.
Angela Merkel also urged Germans to keep social contacts to a minimum until the holidays, citing the possibility of bringing the start of school holidays earlier.
“We must do everything possible” to avoid an “exponential advance” in the number of cases, Merkel said.
Germany has recorded 590 deaths in the last 24 hours caused by COVID-19, a record number.
After being hailed for the way it handled the pandemic during the first wave in the spring, Germany faces big problems heading into the second wave.
The rapid increase in the number of cases was halted with the closure of some sectors of public food, culture and sports in early November, but the number of daily contaminations remains high. Thus, Germany registers around 20,000 new cases of contamination every day, more than in France, and the authorities consider the number of patients in intensive care worrying.
The federal and state governments will discuss possible new measures to stop the pandemic before Christmas.
Despite the limitation of public gatherings to 5 people, the traditional mulled wine stands in Germany during the winter holidays are becoming more and more numerous in the country and attracting many people. They have become a factor in the spread of the virus, according to authorities.
