On Thursday, President Klaus Iohannis had a telephone conversation with the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Angela Merkel, at his request, reports the Presidential Administration.

The discussion took place in preparation for the meeting, on Thursday evening, of the members of the European Council, in videoconference format, dedicated to issues related to the management of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The German Chancellor expressed his condolences to the President of Romania for the victims of the fire that took place in the ATI Section of the Piatra Neam County Emergency Hospital expressed and expressed the hope that the injured would recover in the shortest possible time.

During the discussion, the developments in the two countries and the measures taken in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic were addressed. The Romanian president stressed that the spread of the virus in the European Union continues to be worrying, a situation in which coordination and cooperation among member states must be strengthened.

The issue of negotiations on the multi-annual budget of the European Union for the period 2021-2027, as well as the European Economic Recovery Plan, was also discussed.

President Klaus Iohannis specified that Romania has consistently supported the need to complete these negotiations as soon as possible. For this reason, the Romanian side has shown a constructive and responsible approach, coinciding with the compromise proposals negotiated by the German Presidency of the Council of the EU with the European Parliament.

The President of Romania stressed that our country supported from the beginning the establishment of a conditionality on the respect of the principles of the rule of law in the management of the budget of the European Union and, consequently, supports the agreement obtained by the German Presidency on this file.
