While Hungary has already started producing Remdesivir, Romania is buying the drug that kills COVID from the foreign market. However, there is a company in Iasi that could produce this very important drug in the fight against the pandemic.
Alexandru Rafila explained to Antena 3 that he himself lobbied for the vaccine to be produced in Romania, but it would have met with hostility from state representatives.
“It is good to have capacity, not to depend on other sources of supply and not to compete with other countries for a limited quantity of a certain product”, Alexandru Rafila began his explanation.
The Romanian WHO expert continued: “This problem (the production of Remdesivir in Romania) could also be solved in Romania. I personally helped establish a contact with a manufacturing company, several months ago. The Antibiotice Iaşi company was initially interested. But since it is a state company, there must be a political decision that ultimately supports that approach.
“The company does not have financial and decision-making freedom. If we are really interested, we can do this, to support it from the point of view of the Romanian state,” said Professor Rafila.
