The first containers of medical equipment have been loaded in Hradec Kralove, a city about 100 kilometers from Prague, and are due to arrive in the Czech capital on Monday.

“Fighting the pandemic is now the number one task not only for the military,” said Czech Defense Minister Lubomir Metnar.

The field hospital will provide an additional 500 beds if hospitals in the Czech Republic fill up with COVID-19 patients. It will have a fully equipped operating room, intensive care unit, laboratory and X-ray equipment.

In the Czech Republic, 11,105 new cases of COVID-19 were registered on Friday in the last 24 hours, the highest value of this indicator since the start of the pandemic, according to data published by the Czech Ministry of Health.

The Czech Republic, with a population of 10.7 million, has recorded 160,112 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 1,283 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

The government introduced new restrictions on Wednesday, such as closing restaurants and bars. Sporting and cultural events were banned and the use of masks was expanded.
