The images of what appears to be a flying ship were captured by a photographer in Cornwall, off the coast of England, the BBC reports.
David Morris is the one who took the photo in which the ship appears to levitate over the horizon. The image was captured in Falmouth Cornwall. BBC meteorologist David Braine explained what it was about: an optical illusion “Superior mirage” that occurs due to certain conditionsspecial atmospheric light curves.
Braine says that this optical illusion is a fairly common phenomenon in the Arctic, but much less common in Europe / UK, but it can sometimes occur during winter.
“Superior mirages occur due to a meteorological phenomenon called temperature inversion, when cold air is above water and warm air is above cold air. Because cold air is denser than warm air, it practically directs the light hits the eyes of someone sitting on the ground, on the shore, and changes the perception of how far we see an object, ”says Braine.
