A new strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus identified in the UK. Matt Hancock makes the first statements, after informing the WHO

The SARS-CoV-2 virus, responsible for the pandemic we are currently facing, comes in several forms: milder, but also more severe. Therefore, any genetic modification of the coronavirus should be viewed with caution.

According to statements made Monday by British official Matt Hancock, a new strain of SARS-CoV-2 is spreading in a threatening way in certain areas of England. The Health Secretary says that at least 60 different local authorities have reported infections caused by this type of coronavirus.

Hancock claims that the World Health Organization (WHO) has been informed and that UK scientists have already begun detailed studies, writes BBC.

The official notes that “there is nothing to suggest” that the new variant would cause more severe forms of COVID-19 or that the developed vaccines will no longer work. He told House of Commons lawmakers that there had been dramatic and exponential increases in SARS-CoV-2 infections in London, Kent, parts of Essex and Hertfordshire over the past week.

“We have identified more than 1,000 such cases, predominantly in the south of England, although diseases have been detected in almost 60 different areas.”

The cause of the mutations has not been discovered, but measures must, in any case, be “swift and decisive,” Hancock concludes.

“We are aware of the genetic variant found in more than 1,000 people in England,” WHO expert Mike Ryan said at a briefing in Geneva. “The authorities are analyzing the situation. We have seen many strains, the virus evolves and changes over time,” he said, according to Reuters.
