Residents of a community in central Germany unexpectedly inherited 6.2 million euros ($ 7.5 million) worth of property and shares after the death of a neighbor, CNN reports.
Renate Wedel has lived in the Weiperfelden district of Central Germany with her husband, Alfred Wedel, since 1975.
Alfred was a successful stock investor and died in 2014, and Renate, who had been cared for in a nursing home in Frankfurt since 2016, died in December 2019 at the age of 81.
In April this year, local authorities were informed that Renate had left them money, shares and valuables.
Renate’s sister, who was the original heir, had already passed away, local media reported.
The news surprised the authorities. “At first I thought this was just not possible, I thought it was a wrong comma, something was not right,” said local mayor Bernd Heine.
The Community is obliged to use the heritage, valued at 6.2 million euros, for “community infrastructure”.
