A 37-year-old COVID patient hospitalized in California has been charged with murder and racial murder after he allegedly used an oxygen cylinder to kill his roommate. reports the BBC.

Jesse Martinez was upset when the 82-year-old man he shared the hospital room with began to pray, so he took an oxygen bottle and beat him multiple times, Los Angeles police said. The victim died the next day.

The two men did not know each other and shared a room at Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster County, and they were both being treated for COVID-19.

“The suspect was upset when the victim began to pray. He then hit her with an oxygen cylinder,” the police statement said. “The suspect, Jesse Martinez, 37, has been arrested and charged with murder, racial murder and elder abuse.”

California hospitals are battling the coronavirus pandemic, after the state recorded 1 million new COVID-19 cases in the past 6 weeks.
