Gorj County Municipal Hospital Manager Dr. Alin Cristian Efrim told News.ro that a four-year-old boy, who presented in serious condition at the Emergency Reception Unit, on Thursday morning, died during the day.
“The boy was four years old and came to the emergency room in serious condition, with acute respiratory failure, fever, headache, purpura. He soon went into cardio-respiratory arrest, and the doctors applied resuscitation, but to no avail.” We have a meningococcal infection as a diagnostic suspicion, but we are waiting for confirmation, “said Dr. Alin Cristian Efrim.
According to the cited source, a general disinfection of the medical unit was ordered.
“It was not quarantined, but we closed the Emergency Department temporarily for a general disinfection. It was disinfected, then reopened. We also announced that DSP Gorj will investigate in the community, in the city,” said the doctor.
Shortly after, two other children were hospitalized in the Motru hospital. According to the unit manager, Alin Efrim, he is a child from the kindergarten where the deceased minor was enrolled and another who came into contact with the boy suspected of having a meningococcal infection. The hospital manager also stated that the two children received antibiotic treatment, and it will be decided whether they will be transferred to the Infectious Diseases Department of the Târgu-Jiu County Emergency Hospital.
He also said that the Gorj Public Health Directorate was notified of this case, and a team from this institution is conducting an investigation in the community.
Representatives of the Gorj County Police Inspectorate (IPJ) announced that in this case they are conducting investigations in a criminal case of wrongful death (suspicious death).
The corpse was transported to the Forensic Medicine Service for an autopsy and to determine the exact causes of death.
The manager of the Gorj Municipal Hospital added that people who came into contact with the four-year-old boy, who died but has no symptoms, should go to the family doctor. Those with fever and headache should go to the hospital to see specialists.
According to some sources cited by Agerpres, a quarantine was instituted in the kindergarten where the 4-year-old was, but also in the local children’s club.
