The weekend brings us news about the new technology. USB 4 recently detailed by VESA (Electronic Video Standards Association) and is expected to be released commercially in 2021. First of all, we know that this next version of USB technology will offer support for 8K screens at 60Hz and with HDR, 4K 144Hz and HDR displays, even for 16K displays (15360 x 8460 pixels) with a refresh rate of 60Hz.

It is all due to the new standard. DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 allowing USB 4 technology to offer all the benefits of the DisplayPort 2.0 standard while simultaneously transmitting USB data. We also learn that the new standard remaps high-speed USB-C pins to unlock more video bandwidth.

USB 4 is bi-directional, which means it can deliver up to 40 Gbps of data in any direction. All these updates and innovations take us one step closer to transforming USB Type-C into a universal connector. Even the European Union wants to make USB-C a universal standard, forcing Apple to switch to this type of connector.
