A drug used to treat allergies has been shown to be effective against COVID-19 and has been used to treat more than a million people worldwide, England’s National Health System (NHS) said on Tuesday, according to the DPA, writes AGERPRES.
Dexamethasone, used to treat severe allergies, skin conditions, vomiting, autoimmune diseases, or inflammation, has been used to treat hospitalized coronavirus patients since June last year.
Its use began with a study called Recovery, conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford, UK, which concluded that dexamethasone can reduce mortality in hospitalized patients with COVID-19, which requires oxygen and mechanical ventilation, by 18%, respectively 36%.

According to another study by the Oxford Nuffield School of Medicine, the drug has been used to treat some 22,000 patients in the UK and 958,000 people worldwide.
“Thanks to the exceptional efforts of our researchers, NHS staff and patients, around a million lives may have been saved worldwide,” said NHS Executive Director Simon Stevens.
“Research that normally takes years has produced record responses, with results that have resonated globally,” he said.
“Just as this virus has spread across borders, so must treatments and vaccines, these common ‘exit strategies’ of humanity during the pandemic.”
