Apocalyptic images were captured on Sunday. in the economic capital of Equatorial Guinea, Bata, after four explosions occurred at a munitions depot in a military unit. The force of the explosions was so great that entire areas of the city, nearby, were simply destroyed and others are in ruins. Nobody knows how many people died, how many were injured and how they were.

Survivors prowl the streets in confusion and despair, and at the local hospital, which still stands, medical staff are overwhelmed by the number of patients.

A first count indicates 17 dead and hundreds injured, according to the BBC.

The country’s president said the explosions were caused by “negligence” in storing dynamite, and images on social media show huge plumes of smoke and people searching for survivors in the ruins of collapsed buildings.

The Health Minister asked for volunteers and blood donations due to the large number of victims. There are at least 420 injured, hospitals are out of place, and patients are simply lying on the ground in corridors.

The Spanish Embassy asked Spanish citizens to stay at home and provided them with emergency numbers. Equatorial Guinea was a Spanish colony until 1968.

For his part, the French ambassador conveyed his condolences and described the event as a “catastrophe.”
