The baptismal recommendations could be changed, an official from the Archdiocese of Suceava admitted on Monday, after the death of the baby who went into cardiorespiratory arrest after sinking in the baptismal font.
Archpriest Doru Budeanu, of the Archdiocese of Suceava, acknowledged on Monday that, depending on the cause of this tragedy, the recommendations on how to perform the sacrament of baptism could be changed, in order to prevent other unwanted incidents, writes Monitorul de Suceava .
The priest who conducted the baptismal service, Alexandru Mazarache, said he cannot speak about what happened, but a point of view will be conveyed by the Archdiocese of Suceava and Radauti.
The archpriest confirmed that the baby was completely submerged in water, showing that “baptism is carried out by means of the third immersion, according to the ordinances of the Church.”
He added that, in case of inhalation, the doctors specified that it was liquid, without being able to determine if it was water from the baptismal font or perhaps milk.
Archpriest Doru Budeanu also said that due to an internal investigation by the priest, a series of additional conclusions are expected from the investigation, at least as to the cause of death.
The moment of the tragedy, filmed by witnesses, was handed over to the police.
The ecclesiastical official also mentioned that he is a priest ordained since 2007, who has been performing the holy sacraments for a long time and it is not a matter of lack of experience.
“The father told me that the child was crying, and before the baptism, even after taking it out of the baptismal font, it had vital signs. The only problem the father knew was that he was born prematurely ”, said the archpriest.
The temperature in the church and in the water was just right, the archpriest said.
“The radiators were working, it was also a morning liturgy, so the temperature was adequate, there is no problem that it was cold,” said the father.
He said the holy mysteries of baptism could not be changed, but that “more attention will probably be needed to keep the nose and mouth above water.”
The moment of the tragedy was recorded by the person who filmed the event for the family, the images passed into the hands of the police, who will probably be able to establish with enough certainty what happened.
The Archdiocese of Suceava and Radauti contacted the priest minister and those present to establish the circumstances in which this tragedy occurred and decide the necessary measures.
Archbishopric of Suceava: “It is difficult for us to understand why God allowed this difficult test”
The Press Office of the Archdiocese of Suceava and Radauti released a statement on the tragedy at Sunday’s baptismal service.
The church says it is difficult for her to understand “why God allowed this difficult test.”
We send the entire statement from the Archdiocese of Suceava and Radauti:
“I received with great pain and sadness in my soul the news of baby Justin, only six weeks old, who left for heaven too early, to join the angels, on the morning of February 1, 2021.
The day that should have been a joyous day of dressing baby Justin in “bright clothes” turned into a day of suffering for his parents, godparents, family and community, who were eagerly awaiting his birth. In this time of confusion for all those who will wear clothed clothing instead of festive clothing, including the ministering priest, it is difficult for us to understand why God allowed this difficult trial.
In his treatise “On Children Who Die Early”, St. Gregory of Nisa offers several answers, emphasizing that each created creature comes from God, who cares about its existence, whether it is longer or shorter. And if he allows the end of a life before its time, according to the human mind, it is because, in his foreknowledge, God does not want to deprive the infant of any of his blessings, knowing that man is endowed with many gifts, that he only has the freedom to use them as you see fit.
There is no word or deed to wipe away tears and now soothe the broken hearts of parents and family members, but we are with them at this particularly difficult time and we fervently pray to the Merciful God to strengthen, comfort and heal them. , along with baby Justin, who will henceforth watch over them from the heavenly Father’s throne.
The Archdiocese of Suceava and Radauti has already contacted the priest minister and those present, in order to establish the circumstances in which this tragedy occurred and decide the necessary measures.
Beyond this, we offer humble prayer to God, who rebuked us with this event, to enlighten our minds and direct our lives, saying with the Apostle: “O depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how impenetrable are his ways! For who knew the mind of the Lord, or who was his counselor? (Romans 11, 33-34)”.
Romanian Patriarchate: “Baby sinks after mystery officer makes sure baby has inhaled air”
The Romanian Patriarchate issued a statement on the tragedy at Sunday’s baptismal service.
The Patriarchate explained the procedure to follow for the Sacrament of Baptism.
We send the full statement of the Romanian Patriarchate:
In relation to the tragic case of the child who died this morning in Suceava, I must point out that the Patriarchate still does not have access to the specific details of the ongoing double investigation. I sent the request to expedite the investigation to the Archdiocese of Suceava and Radauti. Its result, corroborated with the result of the judicial investigation carried out by the secular authorities, will be made public by the Archdiocese. As soon as possible. For the moment, he has published on his website a “Pastoral Word” dedicated to the painful situation created there. Beyond him, the position of the Romanian Patriarchate is one of deep compassion towards the family of the deceased child, who has tried so hard now and whose pain we cannot even fully understand. Personally, but also on behalf of the institution that I represent, I also send my deepest condolences to the bereaved Ungureanu family.
The sacrament of Baptism, according to the apostolic canons, is celebrated in the Orthodox Churches by the priest or bishop by means of a triple “sinking” in the name of the Holy Trinity. This sinking lasts two / three seconds and implies a strict protection of the baby, whose back and neck are supported with the right hand, the mouth and nose being carefully protected by the cup of his left hand, so that he cannot swallow a drop of water in seconds as it quickly sinks three times. This brief sinking is done after the mystery officer makes sure the baby has inhaled air. There is also the possibility of baptism by pouring water on the baby’s head, three times, in the name of the Holy Trinity, this decision can be made in cases of need or depending on the health of the baby.
