Scientists at a university research center in Turkey say they have developed an ultra-fast test for the coronavirus. According to Turkish experts, the COVID-19 test is 99% accurate, and it is not necessary to collect nasal samples to perform it. Also, the results are ready in no more than 20 seconds, writes Euro News.

The Diagnovir test kit, developed by researchers at Bilkent University, uses nanotechnology to detect the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the body of patients.

How the ultra-rapid coronavirus test works

By rubbing, a sample is removed from the patient’s oral cavity. It is then mixed with a solution and added to the pathogen detection area.

“It identifies the presence of pathogens with high precision by transmitting a fluorescent signal”, explains Ali Aytac Seyman, a specialist at the National Center for Nanotechnology Research (UNAM). He noted that, unlike the widely used PCR test, which detects specific genetic material in a sample, Diagnovir “focuses on the presence or absence of the virus using advanced optical methods.”

Therefore, the COVID-19 test can give a positive result in 5 to 10 seconds, but the whole process would take up to 20 seconds if the result is negative.

The researchers are now seeking approval from the Turkish authorities to begin mass production of the kits in the next two months. They hope to eventually replace PCR tests.
