The World Health Organization has issued a dire warning.
The next pandemic can happen at any time and can be even more serious and devastating. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO emergency program, issued the warning. His message was blunt: the coronavirus is not the great pandemic that scientists thought would come from time to time.
“Threats of this type will continue,” said Ryan, who said that despite the severity of the coronavirus pandemic, things could be much worse in the future. The WHO is based on the death rate for SARS-Cov-2, which is very low compared to other diseases. In the case of Covid-19, the factors that come into play in determining the risk of death are many and place the lethality of this disease between 0.5 and 1%.
There is unanimity in the scientific community on the issue of the future pandemic that will hit us. It’s not about whether there will be another pandemic, but when the next one will be. The current situation has made it clear that future pandemics will be inevitable and the challenge is to be prepared to go through them.
The coronavirus will never go away
“The most likely scenario is that this coronavirus becomes endemic and poses a very low threat level in the context of a global vaccination program,” Ryan said. “The existence of a vaccine, even if it is very effective, is not a guarantee of eliminating or eradicating an infectious disease,” he added.
The organization’s experts have already said that there is a possibility that the coronavirus will become endemic.
Vaccination against Covid-19 will continue to allow control of the spread of the coronavirus so that societies can return to normal, Ryan said.
