The WhatsApp app will no longer work on several million phones worldwide as of January 1, 2021, following the latest update proposed by the messaging app, according to The Independent.

Therefore, the app will no longer work on older devices, both Android and iPhone, forcing users to update their software if possible, or to purchase a newer smartphone.

Any iPhone that doesn’t run iOS 9 at least, as well as any smartphone that doesn’t have at least Android version 4.0.3, will no longer be able to support the Facebook-owned app.

Virtually any iPhone 4 or earlier will no longer be able to run the WhatsApp application, as it is not compatible with the iOS 9 update.

IPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6S were released before the release of iOS 9, but users can update their operating system if they haven’t already.

Among the phones that operate with the Android system that will no longer be able to support the WhatsApp application are Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Desire and LG Optimus Black.

Only a few million of the more than 2 billion people who use WhatsApp around the world will no longer be able to access the application.
